I am writing to you, as my MP, to ask that you urge the federal government to strengthen Canada’s capacity to undertake basic research. Basic research drives our quality of life, improves our understanding of the world and is key to a strong future.
Canadians benefit from basic research every day, and governments depend on it for evidence to guide decisions on economic, environmental and social challenges. Yet, federal funding for basic research has fallen by 30 per cent in a decade.
Last year, the government commissioned an Advisory Panel to review federal support for fundamental science. The Panel calls on the government to invest now to restore science’s important role in creating a prosperous and innovative country.
I hope that I can count on you to support a substantial increase in funding to Canada’s research granting councils. Our future depends on getting science right.
